Treatment for Mental Health Disorders & Conditions

Mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, can affect all aspects of a person’s life, including relationships, work, and quality of life. Many who struggle with these issues experience hopelessness, low self-esteem, and the need to self-isolate and self-medicate. No one should have to endure the feelings of helplessness that also tend to accompany health disorders and emotional turmoil. Fortunately, effective and individualized treatment is available.

At Guardian Recovery, we understand the importance of addressing mental health conditions with effective treatment options. Our holistic approach combines evidence-based therapies, medical management, and personalized support to help individuals achieve long-lasting recovery and improve their overall mental and spiritual well-being.

Can Mental Health Disorders Be Treated Successfully?

Many mental health issues can be treated successfully, allowing those motivated to recover to lead more fulfilling lives while managing their condition. The most appropriate treatment approach depends on several factors, including the mental health disorder, its severity and duration, and the person’s unique circumstances.

While successful treatment is entirely possible, it’s crucial to understand that not all mental health conditions can be cured and that the primary goal is effective management. More specific goals of treatment are to minimize symptoms, increase functioning, and ensure the person has the tools and resources they need to cope with challenges in a healthy way. The individual in treatment may anticipate being able to manage their condition effectively and enjoy an improved quality of life.

Most Effective Treatments for Mental Health Disorders

Mental health treatment is highly personalized, and what works well for one person may not be as helpful for another. However, several therapeutic approaches have been found effective for various mental health conditions.

Mental Health Treatment Approaches Include:

  • Psychotherapy or Talk Therapy—Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that typically serves as a foundation for evidence-based treatment. It focuses on identifying and altering negative thought patterns and behaviors and has been shown to be highly successful for a wide range of mental health disorders. These include depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and others.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)—DBT, which combines cognitive and mindfulness techniques, has been found to be especially beneficial for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other conditions marked by emotional dysregulation. These include eating disorders, depression, and anxiety.
  • Family Therapy—This approach can be effective for improving interpersonal relationships, promoting healthy communication within families, and helping loved ones understand the factors that contribute to mental health issues.
  • Teletherapy—Remote behavioral health services, including psychotherapy and medication management, have become increasingly available and can be paramount for individuals when in-person treatment participation is challenging or impractical.
  • Mindfulness—Holistic therapies such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have shown positive results in the treatment of various mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety.
  • Experiential Therapies—Recreational and creative arts therapies, including art and music therapy, can promote self-expression and help individuals healthily process their emotions.
  • Peer Support—Support from others who have faced similar challenges can be invaluable, providing a sense of comradery. Support groups and peer support specialists are available for various mental health issues.
  • Medication Management—Prescription medications, such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers, can be beneficial for the short- and long-term treatment of certain mental health conditions. (1)

Can Mental Health Conditions Be Treated Without Medication?

Some mental health disorders can be treated successfully without medication. Evidence-based therapies, such as CBT and DBT, have shown effectiveness in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Additionally, lifestyle changes, including exercise, stress management strategies, and peer and family support, can also play a significant role in managing mental health conditions without medication.

That said, like all mental health treatments, the efficacy of non-medication approaches may vary depending on the person and the nature and severity of their condition. Sometimes, therapy, other strategies, and medication may be necessary to achieve the best treatment outcome.

Addressing Co-Occurring Disorders in Treatment

According to the 2020 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 59.9 million Americans had a mental health disorder in 2020. (2) Of that number, 17 million reported also experiencing a substance use disorder—known as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring condition. Fortunately, many treatment strategies can effectively address both issues, regardless of whether one developed first and triggered the other or whether they both appear to have arisen from similar underlying factors.

Either issue can develop first. Many develop drug dependence or alcoholism to cope with their mental health symptoms. Others notice unwanted changes in their mental state because substances affect the structure and functioning of the brain over time. Behavioral health experts understand that mental health treatment plays a vital role in addiction recovery and that addressing both issues simultaneously is essential to achieving the most favorable results.

The Difference Between Inpatient & Outpatient Care

Inpatient or residential programs involve staying at a treatment center 24/7, where individuals can receive round-the-clock supervision and support. This level of care is often recommended for those with severe symptoms or who require a structured environment to work on their mental health issues.

Conversely, outpatient care allows individuals to receive treatment while living in a private residence and attending therapy and support groups regularly. Moreover, it is common for those who complete an inpatient program to transfer to outpatient treatment, which provides them with a step-down level of care while they reacclimate to real-world challenges. These forms of treatment offer many of the same therapies and activities, and both can be effective in managing mental health symptoms.

Mental Health Disorder Treatment Services We Offer

At Guardian Recovery, we offer a wide variety of therapeutic strategies that are innovative and evidence-based. These work in combination to provide an all-encompassing approach to mental health treatment.

Psychiatric Services

Psychiatric services involve the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of those with mental health disorders. Our qualified psychiatrists provide therapy sessions, prescribe appropriate medication, and monitor the individual’s recovery. This holistic approach aims to help them manage their symptoms effectively and improve their chances of maintaining long-term wellness.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive procedure we offer that involves the use of magnetic fields to stimulate specific regions of the brain, which can help relieve depression and other mental health issues. (#) Although this is a relatively unconventional technique, it has shown promising results for many individuals in improving mood and reducing the need for medication. (3)

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) allow individuals to receive intensive therapy and support while living at home. It’s designed for those who require more structure than traditional outpatient programs but do not need the level of care provided by inpatient treatment. Our IOP model includes individual therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducation to help people cultivate healthy coping skills and manage their symptoms.

Ketamine Treatment

Ketamine is a potential option for those who have not responded well to first-line medications. When used under medical supervision, it involves the administration of low doses of ketamine and has been shown to have rapid and significant effects on reducing depressive symptoms. (4) We offer this treatment approach because it can provide hope for those who require alternative solutions to alleviate their mental health issues.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy involves one-on-one sessions with a trained therapist to address the underlying causes of mental health struggles and learn healthier methods of coping. This highly personalized approach often centers on CBT and allows individuals to gain insight into their experiences, feelings, and behaviors in a safe and supportive setting. Here, they can develop problem-solving and stress-relieving skills to help them navigate challenges and improve their mental and emotional wellness.
