Dual Diagnosis Program

Dual Diagnosis treatment options are essential for people who simultaneously suffer from a substance abuse disorder and a mental illness. In order for addiction to be overcome long-term, all underlying issues must be thoroughly and adequately addressed — including conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia and other personality disorders.

Substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions often occur together, predominantly because they have common risk factors. These risk factors could include genetic predisposition, environmental factors, unresolved trauma and high stress levels. Certain mental illnesses can also contribute the development of a substance abuse disorder, and vice-versa. Many men and women who struggle with undiagnosed or untreated mental illnesses turn to drugs and alcohol as a means of self-medication. Mental health conditions also change the chemistry of the brain, making those afflicted with mental illness more susceptible to substance abuse.

In order for mental illnesses to be adequately treated, a person must stop using drugs or alcohol. Along the same vein, in order for substance abuse treatment to be successful, a person must be properly diagnosed and all underlying conditions thoroughly treated. At Guardian Recovery we offer dual diagnosis treatment options during every stage of the recovery process, from medical detox through aftercare.

Intervention Services

Addiction is a highly complex condition; it is a “disease of denial,” and even those who are clearly in need of professional help often refuse to seek it. For this reason, we offer comprehensive and highly effective intervention services. An intervention is a professionally staged event geared towards helping someone enter into a program of recovery. It is important to note that addiction treatment does not need to be voluntary in order to be effective. In some cases, willingness can be developed as the treatment process continues. This is often the case if a substance abuse disorder has become life-threatening, or if the person in question is no longer capable of making rational decisions.

During the intervention, the loved ones of the person struggling with addiction will provide specific examples of their destructive behaviors and how the active addiction has made them feel. They will present a pre-arranged treatment plan and set personal boundaries that are to be maintained if the person fails to accept treatment. The entire intervention is closely overseen by a highly experienced, licensed interventionist, who walks you through every single step of the process from start to finish. While the main goal is to get your loved one into a long-term program of addiction recovery, there is always a chance that they will refuse — which is why our interventionists know how to console and counsel a family and provide follow-up services once the event itself has concluded.

Family Workshop

At Guardian Recovery we believe that the family members of our clients should be as involved in the recovery processes as they would like to be. Family involvement is important, seeing as the entire family unit is often devastated by the addiction. Not only is it emotionally devastating to watch someone you love fight a (seemingly) losing battle, but the family members of addicts and alcoholics often resort to their own unhealthy coping mechanisms. In order for long-term sobriety to be maintained, the family unit must heal as a whole and return to a healthy state of functioning.

Our family workshops are intensive, three-day retreats designed by a team of licensed family therapists in order to facilitate the healing process. Each workshop begins with the loved ones of the client. They discuss their own experiences with the active addiction, and process how their lives have changed as a direct result. The therapeutic team focuses on gaining knowledge surrounding the unique set of circumstances. During the initial day of the retreat there is also a significant emphasis placed on education — the loved ones of the client learn about the Disease Model of Addiction, and they begin to understand that the actions of their loved one are no way linked to any shortcomings on their behalf, nor are they a sign that their addicted loved one doesn’t love them enough to quit.

During the second day of the workshop the client joins his or her family members, and the family unit begins to heal as a whole. Healthy and productive dialogue is overseen by a licensed family therapist, and functionality begins to be restored. By the third day of the workshop, each member of the family is equipped with the healthy coping mechanisms necessary to maintain harmony once the client returns home. It is up to the family to continue practicing what they have learned, and to engage in self-care in order to maintain their own mental and emotional health.
