Teen & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Treatment

It is essential for those in the early stages of recovery to avoid rushing through the treatment process. At Guardian Recovery, we understand that adolescent clients may be eager to get back to their day-to-day lives once they begin treatment. However, cutting treatment short can easily lead to relapse, which will undeniably make the process all that much more time-consuming in the long run. Partial hospitalization is an ideal option for teens who have recently completed inpatient treatment but are not entirely ready to transition back into fully independent living.

At Guardian Recovery, our teen PHP program provides teens the support they need while allowing them to return home to a structured living environment every evening and implement what they learn in a real-life environment. Contact us today to learn more about our adolescent partial hospitalization program.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Partial Hospitalization is a level of clinical care that typically follows residential inpatient treatment and precedes intensive outpatient treatment (IOP). During a PHP, teens generally take part in a full schedule of activities for approximately 5 or 6 days a week. These could include individual, group, and family therapy, educational workshops, recreational activities, meditation, and other evidence-based interventions. While in PHP, teens generally live at a sober living facility, group home, or private home after attending their PHP activities.

What Is the Treatment Process in a PHP Program?

At Guardian Recovery, the PHP treatment process includes a combination of therapeutic interventions and psychoeducation. Teens typically engage in their treatment program between 5 and 6 days a week. This allows each client to develop coping techniques and to practice the techniques learned throughout sessions. The experienced staff working on your child’s treatment plan will update you throughout the PHP process.

The Benefits of Partial Hospitalization for Your Teen’s Substance Use Disorder (SUD)

There are various benefits related to teen PHP treatment programs. PHPs help teens develop healthier and more adaptive habits, positive thinking patterns, and effective coping techniques.

Additional benefits of teen PHPs include: (1)

  • Peer support – In a PHP setting, teens have the ability to offer one another peer support, encouragement, and advice based on their personal experiences. Teens also hone their communication skills and develop healthy friendships with one another.
  • A continuation of intensive therapy – In PHP, teens have access to individual, group, and family therapy sessions. Individual therapy occurs once a week (or more, depending on how many clients are involved in the program at a time). Group therapy sessions take place every day that the PHP meets.
  • Access to psychiatric services – Our PHP programs offer medication management and one-on-one meetings with a licensed, on-staff psychiatrist for those needing it. This is essential for adolescents experiencing both mental health and substance use disorders.
  • An intermediary amount of personal freedom – It can be challenging to make the transition from inpatient treatment back into the real world. A step-down treatment process greatly reduces the risk of relapse for teens receiving treatment.
  • A slow transition back into independent living – Teens attending a PHP never feel like they are forced to stand on their own two feet before they feel completely comfortable doing so. Each teen is allowed to transition back to independent living at their own pace.
  • The ability to process experiences in a therapeutic setting – If a teen experiences a challenge outside of treatment, they can process this experience with their peers and in the presence of a licensed therapist.
  • A continuation of relapse prevention training – Teens learn to identify and work through their personal relapse triggers.
  • A strong emphasis on the development of life skills – Our PHP focuses on instilling teens with the life skills they need to thrive on their own once treatment comes to an end.
