Common Addiction Recovery Questions
What Happens After Treatment?

If you have recently completed an addiction treatment program or if you are considering committing to a treatment program soon, you might be wondering what happens once treatment ends. Do you simply return home and carry on with your day-to-day life? Do you move into a sober living house or find another new living situation to keep you accountable? At Guardian Recovery Network we know what a vulnerable time early sobriety can be, which is why we offer personalized aftercare planning services as part of our addiction treatment program. Each individual client works directly with a case manager in developing an aftercare plan that meets all of their unique needs. What happens after treatment depends heavily on your personal plan of action. We have outlined several examples of what standard aftercare plans look like, though your personal plan will vary slightly based on several important factors. To learn more about aftercare planning or to learn more about Guardian Recovery Network and the addiction treatment services and levels of care we offer, contact us today.

Planning for Discharge

No matter what level of care you are in — whether you’re in medical detox, residential inpatient treatment or IOP — you will always have a discharge plan in place before program completion. There are several factors which might influence the discharge planning process. These factors include:

  • The level of care you are currently in.
  • The severity of the substance use disorder.
  • The presence of any underlying mental health concerns.
  • Personal history with previous stints in treatment and subsequent relapse.
  • Family involvement in the addiction treatment process.
  • Financial ability/health insurance coverage.
  • Plans to enter into a lower level of treatment like partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient care.

The day of your discharge you will have a solid idea of what steps to take next. No matter what level of care you are in, we will help you develop a personalized plan that caters to all of your unique clinical needs. We involve the loved ones of each client in the entire discharge planning process from start to finish, making sure everyone is on the same page. Our main priority is ensuring clients have a detailed plan in place to protect and support them during early sobriety.

Sober Living

Many of our clients decide to transition from residential inpatient treatment directly into a sober living home, or live in a sober home as they participate in a PHP or IOP program. A sober living home provides additional structure and support to people who are early in sobriety as they navigate their newfound recovery as it applies to their daily lives. Early sobriety can be an especially vulnerable time. People are faced with a new set of challenges and potential relapse triggers, and many must adopt an entirely new way of life. In sober living, those who are new to recovery live with other sober people and have access to the advice and guidance of support staff members 24/7. Sober living provides increased accountability, seeing as residents are required to attend recovery meetings and participate in daily house chores (among other requirements). If substance use is suspected they will be subjected to a drug test and placed back into a higher level of care if they have relapsed. At Guardian Recovery Network we do not have any sober living homes of our own, but we are always available to help you find a safe and supportive living environment in your area. We work closely with many reputable sober homes across the country, which clients can easily transition into during any stage of the recovery process. Contact us today to learn more about sober living options near you.

Our Drug & Alcohol Treatment Services Include

Continuing Therapy

Guardian Recovery Network clients have the opportunity to continue with their assigned therapist once treatment concludes. This option often comes recommended, seeing as the therapist a client worked with while they were in treatment already has insight to their personal history, challenges and underlying issues. If you choose to continue with a therapist outside of our network, we are happy to put you in touch with a licensed therapist with a personal background in substance dependence recovery.

12-Step Programs

At Guardian Recovery Network we believe in the benefits associated with 12-Step program involvement. Two of our residential treatment centers (The Plymouth House and Immersion Recovery Center) provide a thorough 12-Step education. Most of our other treatment programs offer some degree of 12-Step program involvement. When it comes to aftercare planning, Alcoholics Anonymous and similarly structured support groups provide the following benefits:

  • Increased accountability.
  • A built-in network of support supports.
  • Added structure to daily routine.
  • A good example of long-term sobriety.
  • A cost-effective program (AA has no dues or fees).
  • Global access to recovery-related support (AA is everywhere).
  • The opportunity to help others.

Alternative Support Groups

Alcoholics Anonymous is not the only option when it comes to peer support groups. Alternative options include:

  • Young People in Recovery – Also known as YPR, this organization revolves around providing young people with safe spaces to meet with others who are committed to overcoming drug or alcohol addiction.
  • SMART Recovery – This non-profit organization provides an alternative to AA which focuses on self-empowerment. The official website states, “Self-Management And Recovery Training (SMART) is a global community of mutual-support groups. At meetings, participants help one another resolve problems with any addiction.”
  • Al-Anon – There are other 12-Step meetings some of our clients might find beneficial. For example, Al-Anon provides support to those with loved ones who are struggling with addiction. Because addiction can be hereditary, many of our clients have other addicts and/or alcoholics in their family, and benefit from the coping mechanisms taught in this program.
