Getting Sober vs. Staying Sober
When a person goes to treatment, they participate in a full schedule of therapy, 12-Step work, recreational activities, yoga, meditation and educational workshops. They are surrounded by a supportive recovery community. And they face little temptation. But what happens once a person leaves treatment and tries to transition to the real world? Are they equipped with the emotional tools and support they need to avoid resorting back to old behaviors?
At Guardian Recovery facilities, we place a strong emphasis on relapse prevention. This could include analyzing an individual’s potential relapse triggers and putting mechanisms in place to avoid them. But it can also be learning emotional regulation techniques and mindfulness. It can be building a safety net and arranging for a sober living environment. There are many things to do and learn to prevent relapse. This article series focuses on relapse prevention.
